5 Players Who Went From Starters to Bench-Warmers in the Premier League

Sometimes, even the most talented of footballers can face difficult obstacles in their lives. Despite being better than most other players in the Premier League, these footballers find themselves warming the bench for some really big clubs even after having given their best in the past.

There are several players in the Premier League who had joined big clubs in hope of finding regular first team football but end up playing second fiddles to the manager’s favourites. Some of the players on this list are barely 30 and yet have to sit on the sidelines despite being completely able to change the game for their sides.

Let’s take a look at 5 such players in the Premier League who went from starters to benchwarmers

Olivier Giroud:

The dynamic French striker is arguably one of the most underrated strikers in the Premier League. Despite consistently scoring goals for Arsenal since his arrival back in 2012, Giroud has lost his place in Wenger’s first to Alexandre Lacazette. The former Lyon striker is now Arsenal’s first choice striker after signing him from Lyon earlier this summer for close to £50 million. However, one can never count out Giroud from challenging Lacazette as he has shown in the past. It won’t be a surprise if Giroud manages to fight his way back into the Gunner’s starting XI in the coming weeks.

Wilfried Bony:

The 28-year-old Ivory Coast striker was leading the score sheets for Swansea City before joining Manchester City on a £25 million deal back in 2014. A lot was expected from the Bony that seasons but he could barely manage to outclass Sergio Aguero in his limited appearances for the Sky Blues. The arrival of Pep Guardiola last summer completely killed off any chances of making a comeback into the first team. Although, Bony could now get back to his best after joining his former club Swansea in the summer.

Michy Batshuayi:

The 23-year-old Belgium international striker enjoyed a brilliant first season at Chelsea, having won the Premier League in his first appearance in the Premier League. Batshuayi was brought in from Marseille after two impressive seasons in front of goal as a regular starter. But, with Antonio Conte having brought in Alvaro Morata this summer for a record fee, Batshuayi is now playing second fiddle to the highly rated Spanish striker. Batshuayi is definitely not a player who should be warming benches especially after winning the League.

Sergio Aguero:

The Argentine international striker is perhaps the best Non-English striker that the Premier League has ever seen. The 29-year-old target man had fired Manchester City to two Premier League titles in the past and is one of the most consistent goal scorers in Europe with 170 goals in 255 appearances for Manchester City. Despite his incredible stats, City’s new manager, Pep Guardiola has not yet chosen Aguero to be his leading striker having brought in 20-year-old Brazilian striker Gabriel Jesus in January last season.

Guardiola started Jesus over Aguero quite a few times in the Premier League last season and is planning to more of the same this season. Aguero is definitely not the kind of player any team would want on their bench. While it’s surprising to see Guardiola’s plans for him, his age could also be a factor but not that it has ever a matter concern for the Argentine.

Daniel Sturridge:

The England international might not be the most physically fit strikers in the Premier League but he certainly one of the most talented ones. Sturridge has always had a bad history of injuries and has not quite managed to repeat the same form he had shown playing alongside Luis Suarez back in 2013/14 season. Despite being fit and looking in the best shape of his career this season, Jurgen Klopp has chosen Roberto Firmino as his leading striker in the team. Only 28, and at the peak of his career, Sturridge certainly does not deserve to be warming the bench at Liverpool.

The Amazing Story of the Nigeria Olympic Dream Team

The Dream team one was coached by Dutchman Johannes Bonfrere and started their path to the final with a 1-0 victory over Hungary and a 2-0 win over Japan before completing the first round with a 1-0 loss to the enterprising Brazilians. The Africans then shut down Mexico, led by eccentric goalkeeper Jorge Campos, 2-0, in the quarter-finals to set up a pair of amazing matches.

Losing in the semi-finals to a formidable Brazilian side that boasted of Bebeto, Ronaldo and Rivaldo, 3-1, Nigeria finally woke up in the 78th minute as Victor Ikpeba scored from 20 meters out. As time was running out, inspirational Captain Nwankwo Kanu took center stage, scoring in a scramble in front of the goal in the final minute to equalize. With extra-time barely three minutes out, Kanu fired home the game-winner from 16 meters to complete one of the greatest comebacks in international football history in what many observers felt was the greatest Olympic football match ever played.

The Dream Team later went ahead to stage another miraculous comeback against Argentina in the gold-medal match in front of 86,117 spectators in the Sanford Stadium in Athens, Georgia. At the end of 90 minutes of exciting football, Nigeria triumphed over Argentina.

The Argentinians held a 2-1 advantage on goals by Claudio Lopez who scored via a well taken header in the third minutes and Hernan Crespo in the 50th minute of play via a penalty kick. The resilient Dream team one came back strongly in the game and equalized in the 74th minute of play when striker Daniel Amokachi scrambled in the decisive goal. With a minute remaining, super substitute Emmanuel Amuneke scored the winning goal to give Nigeria a famous 3-2 victory.

It was a momentous day in the history of Nigeria football, as the international football community celebrated a rare feat by an African side.

Dream Team Two

With the achievement of the Dream Team I in Atlanta 1996, the pressure was on the Dream team two to perform up to expectation at the Olympic Games held in 2000 at the beautiful city of Sydney in Australia.

The team was not lacking in quality players, as they had in their fold: Victor Agali, Yakubu Aiyegbeni, Garba Lawal and Celestine Babayaro, but unfortunately, they were knocked out in the quarterfinals. In their first match, the Dream team two drew 3-3 with Honduras, before defeating Australia 3-2 in their second match. They drew 1-1 with Italy, to set up a fascinating quarter-final clash with Chile. It was an encounter that exposed the inadequacy of the Dream team two, as they were humiliated 4-1 by an inspired Chilean side.

Nigeria Dream Team Three-Dreams Never Last For Ever

The dream died in 2004, when the Nigerian Olympic football team then known as: The Dream team three, could not scale through the African qualifiers. Tunisia qualified for Athens 2004 at the expense of Nigeria Dream team three with an embarrassing 2-0 defeat of Nigeria in the last group match at Tunis. The team which also represented the country at the 8th All African Games hosted by Nigeria fought their way into the finals of the football event, only to loss to Cameroon 2-0, at the Ultra modern Abuja National stadium.

Dream Team Four-The Re-Birth of the Nigeria Olympic Team

The dream was re-ignited in 2008, when a bunch of talented footballers that were offspring’s from the U-20 team that picked up the silver medals at the World Youth Championship in Holland in 2005, stormed Beijing, for the Olympic football tournament. Coach Samson Siasia, one of the best youth coaches in Nigeria, led them to the Olympics. Paired alongside heavy weights like the Netherlands, Japan and the United States in group B, the Dream team Four started their Olympic football campaign with a barren 0-0 draw with the Netherlands, before bouncing back to record a morale boosting 2-1 victory over Japan. They confirmed their superiority in the group with another 2-1 win over the United States. Ivory Coast fell on the way side to Coach Samson Siasia tutored side in the quarter-finals, as they suffered a 2-0 defeat.

The Semi-final pairing saw the best outing of the Dream team Four, as they ran riot against a hapless Belgian side that tried desperately to contain the rampaging Nigerians. The encounter ended 4-1 in favor of Nigeria, and the die was once again cast for a tantalizing encounter between Nigeria and arch rival Argentina. It was a repeat of the 2005 U-20 World Cup held in Holland, as the main actors were still very much around on both sides. Revenge was what the Nigerians were singing, and they had diminutive Lionel Messi to contend with in their quest to winning the Olympic Football Gold for the second time since 1996. It was a close encounter which was decided by a lone goal scored in the 58th minutes of play by Angel Di Maria of Argentina. The Dream team Four once again had to play second fiddle to an experienced Argentine side, as they lost the epic encounter 1-0.

What Are the Qualities of a Football Team Striker?

Every team is like a useless pack of cards if there are no good strikers because you can’t win a match without scoring goals and you can’t score goals without having potent strikers. The question then is who is a striker? And what are the qualities of a good striker?

A striker is a football player whose responsibility is to score goals. This simply means that if a striker cannot score goals then he should not be in the team in the first place.

Now, let’s look at the qualities of a good striker or forward. A good striker should have a clear vision just like a good goalkeeper. A good striker should be able to convert any chance to a goal. But he cannot just take his chances if he cannot see very well.

A good striker should have speed. This is where counter attack comes into play. If the strikers in a team lack speed then counter attacks become useless. If you take a look at Spanish, Argentine and Brazilian national teams you will appreciate the value of speed to any striker. Spanish, Argentine and Brazilian teams are so good at counter attacks simply because they have strikers that can move with the ball so fast.

A good striker should have what I call «goal sense». This simply means that he or she should know when to use the head or leg. He or she should know when to tap in the ball. He or she should know when to pass the ball to another player that is better positioned to score the goal. He or she should also know when to be selfish with the ball.

A good striker should have inner strength, vigor, stamina, or energy. He or she should be able to surmount any kind of opposition once he or she is with the ball. Great strikers of our time such as Samuel Eto’o Fils of Cameroon and FC Barcelona of Spain, Didier Drogba of Ivory Coast and Chelsea FC of England and Wayne Rooney of England and Manchester United of England are some graphic examples of strikers that have the much needed strength.

What Manner of Ministers?

The administration has 8 months left in the season. One would have expected Acting President Goodluck to reinvent the team as hyped in the media, by bringing in fresh, trusted and vibrant hands to enable him finish his 8 months as a Manager on a historic note.

Each time I watch or read news on the state of the Nigerian nation I just get paranoid, other times I simply smile and shake my head. My reaction is not because of the sorry or bad news, but the extent to which these unknown conspirators insult our intelligence. I have always been of the opinion way before the Yardua health political saga, that a small group of dumb people determine how this country is run. The Yardua issue only went to prove how annoyingly un-smart these so called cabal are. These shameless individuals will do anything to sustain themselves in power (including being stupid).

Am sure most Nigerians will be disappointed with Acting President Goodluck Jonathan, we all gave him the benefit of doubt and hoped that he would be the one to bring the much needed fresh air into the leadership of this country (at least for a day or two). I don’t know about you, but me; «I rundown for the man». He just went on to confirm is liverlessnes. How soon he showed us he lacked the political will to bring much needed change to this government.

Back to the list of ministers, contrary to my expectations, the Acting Vice President went ahead to do the same two major things every God forsaken administration always do;

1. Recycling old hands that never performed with their first, second third… in some cases up to their tenth chance (someone just murmured Jerry Gana) or appointing members of their families

2. Never attaching portfolios to Ministerial Nominees until after they have been screened and accepted by our dishonorable legislators.

The idea of recycling old unsuccessful hands or appointing their family members is nothing but political. Competence is a non issue when it comes to appointing ministers in Nigeria. How then do we expect to take our country to the Eldorado we so desire, when we consciously keep putting sentiments and petty politics ahead of the development and well being of the nation. What is the justification of Josphine Anenih, Murtala Yardua and Josephine Tapgun appointments as minister, if not sheer politics?

Our leaders must begin to embrace the political will to ensure that we move forward for good. Rid their selves of this selfish attitude. Nigeria is bigger than any individual or family, and I refused to believe that the Anenihs and the Yarduas are the most competent candidates from their respective States.

Having portfolios attached to a ministerial nominee will enable the public access each of them based on the proposed office. It will enable the public determine the competence of each individual and not reserve that responsibility solely to our dishonorable legislators.

Effective performance management should be encouraged in government. Targets are never given to newly appointed ministers to effectively score each of them over a period. It’s thought provoking how a minister in all ramifications, failed in a previous ministry is reappointed and deployed to a new ministry. Using football as analogy, the team comes first, just like the country. Only the best should be hired, if we want to win, not party members or friends and families.

Barcelona is one, if not the best football team in the world. So, imagine a Messi playing defense or a Puyol playing as an attacker I wonder if there would be where they are today. Our leaders must begin to place square pegs in square hole in the appointment of ministers in Nigeria, if we must become one of the top 20 nations in the world (not in 2020 anyway). Nevertheless, let’s watch and pray like we always do. And hope the current administration proves us wrong (I sincerely hope they do).

An Argentine Soccer Team Review – A Soccer World Cup Perspective

Over the years Argentina’s Soccer World Cup history has been remarkable. Their only unsuccessful qualification was in 1970. For whatever reasons, they made the decision to miss three global soccer showcases; but from 1974 onwards they have been regular participants at the Soccer Worldcup tournaments and were knocked out in the first round in 2002, for the first and only time.

As the Argentina 1978 Argentina and Mexico 1986 FIFA World Cup defenders, La Albiceleste faced a series of confronting 2010 world soccer qualifying games. However having overcome various issues, the Argentine soccer team are focused on winning the World Football Cup 2010 for the first time in 24 years. Potentially this goal may well become truth as coach, Diego Armando Maradona, has superior players in his squad (including several players accountable for the team’s quarter finals game at the Germany 2006 event).

Notable Soccer Worldcup Players

The Argentine soccer team is home to one of the world’s greatest football players, Lionel Messi. Thus it’s not surprising that they’re relying heavily on him to guide them to triumph at South Africa 2010.

Supporting him in midfield is their captain and motivation, Javier Mascherano. Let’s also not disregard Juan Sebastian Veron, who not only has incredible experience, but also has an issue to resolve after receiving critique during Argentina’s inadequate performance at the 2002 Korea/Japan tournament. The player with the most appearances is Lionel Messi, having played in 18 Soccer Worldcup games. The top goal scorers are Sergio Aguero, Lionel Messi and Juan Roman Riquelme (4).

Argentina’s Coach

Born October 30, 1960 in Lanus, Argentina, Diego Maradona is regarded as one of the world’s best footballer’s, alongside Pele of Brazil. He’s now tasked with conveying his talent, knowledge and excellence as a player to the national team he now leads.

Maradona is recognized as a competitive, impulsive and no-fluff kind of guy. As a player, he was nothing short of brilliant. He climbed through the ranks with his supreme moment being at Napoli in 1984.

However, in 1991 an enduring drug problem led him to a 15 month sanction. Later at the 1994 Soccer Worldcup he was dismissed due to positive testing for a banned substance. As a consequence of his addiction problems he experienced serious health issues in 2004 and 2007.

After a nine year break, it came as a surprise when he was named as the successor to Alfio Basile, who was dismissed due to unsatisfactory performance. But, to date Maradona hasn’t fared much better, with speculation of his replacement. With South Africa Worldcup 2010 around the corner, he has some work to do.

Argentina FIFA Soccer Worldcup Successes

– As a whole the Argentine soccer team has played four FIFA World Cup Finals. In 1978 they beat Netherlands and Germany in 1986. But in 1930 they were defeated by Uruguay and again in 1990 to Germany.

– South Africa 2010 is Argentina’s 20th Soccer Worldcup appearance and their tenth consecutive appearance.

– Diego Maradona played in four succeeding finals between 1982 and 1994 and now leads the team to the South Africa Worldcup 2010 in his first role as a coach.
